Event description

Stories about violence and inequity are never easy to read – because the most important stories never are.

Fernanda Melchor is widely recognised as one of the most exciting new voices of Mexican literature – and with good reason. Her deft and ruthless use of provocative violence, grim social commentary, and a relentless refusal to let her reader off the hook have made her work both addictive and essential. In Paradais she turns her laser gaze on inequity and misogyny, pulling her reader into a nightmarish scenario that is ultimately terrifying because it could be real.

Fernanda Melchor’s Hurricane Season was shortlisted for the International Booker and International Literature Prize Dublin in 2020. She was born in Veracruz in 1982.

Fernanda Melchor will be in conversation about her writing with novelist Claire Kilroy.

‘Fernanda Melchor explores violence and inequity in this brutal novel. She does it with dazzling technical prowess, a perfect pitch for orality, and a neurosurgeon’s precision for cruelty’ – Mariana Enríquez

Presented in association with Instituto Cervantes Dublin
