Burn After Reading by Catherine Ryan Howard

Irish sports star Jack Smyth was hailed a hero when he ran into his burning home to save his wife Kate, who tragically died in the fire. But then it was discovered that Kate was already dead before the fire began.

Despite all the suspicion, he lands a book deal a year later to tell his side of the story. Author Emily is hired to ghost write Jack’s book and she has secrets of her own to keep…

Catherine Ryan Howard returns with another brilliant thriller that deals with important issues, yet to say any more would be a massive spoiler. The story is inspired by real events when OJ Simpson landed a book deal to make a hypothetical confession to the murder of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. In a huge real life plot twist, the ghostwriter of the book was going to be a neighbour of Nicole’s, who was a witness for the prosecution during Simpson’s trial. Naturally, there was a huge public outcry and Harper Collins cancelled the book. However, the Goldmans, who had won a civil judgement against Simpson, fought for the rights for the book to be published, with one small change – the “if” in the title was produced so small that the title was cleverly titled I Did It. The truth really is stranger than fiction.
