Writing.ie Use of AI Policy

Articles

Writing.ie does not accept articles that have been written by generative AI in any form.

Books We Feature

Our aim is to support human authors in the creation and promotion of their work. We are a free resource that has been lovingly built by the author community to support the author community.

We stand against the unlicensed use of copyrighted materials in any form.

Writing.ie uses the Society of Authors Human Authored definition to clarify what we mean by human authors. We will only feature books that are ‘texts created by you as a sole author or together with other human beings and that it is your own intellectual creation as the result of the exercise of your skill, labour and judgment.

The text, therefore, represents the expression of your creativity as the human author and it has not been produced by the use of a Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) model e.g. by the use of prompts.

The use of GAI or tools with AI-embedded features does not disqualify a work from being ‘Human Authored’ provided that the tools have been used for assistive purposes only e.g. the use of GAI-powered tools like a word processing programme, spelling and grammar check, or any other use that does not generate text.’

At Writing.ie we do not believe that AI should be used for planning, plotting or structuring a story. It should not be used for creating character or location description. All of these functions use generative AI. AI is only able to create because it has been trained on copyright-protected material that was scraped by tech companies without authors’ permission or compensation. If you give AI a prompt, the words it produces are based on other authors’ work.

Generative AI is a threat not only to authors and illustrators, but to all creatives.

In submitting your book to be featured on Writing.ie, you are committing to our policy and guaranteeing that your book was not written using generative AI in any form as outlined here.

Covers & marketing materials

We will not knowingly support books that have AI generated covers.

We appreciate that AI generated trailers or marketing materials may appear to be free, but use of GAI in this way is a serious threat and cost to the environment, as well as creators’ livelihoods.

We also expect authors to be real people, not AI generated profiles. Many authors use pen names, but we will not allow content where there is a disingenuous use of a name of profile to attempt to gain market share.

Using assistative AI such as a spell check, grammar check or similar tools is now part of our daily life, and can be vital to those who face healthcare or learning challenges. We fully appreciate that assisative AI has a vital role to play in areas such as data analysis and medicine (for instance).

Removal

We reserve the right to remove any content that we believe contravenes our policies. The Editors decision is final.

We undertake to do our best within capacity, to ensure that books with text and covers wholly or partially generated by AI are not featured on Writing.ie, however we are human and errors may be made.

More About Human Authored

Human Authored is a labelling scheme that authors can take part in if they want to show their book has been ‘human written’ without the use of generative AI.

Authors can sign up to the scheme if they are a member of the Society of Authors. Once registered they sign an agreement to say their work adheres to the definition of Human Authored. On completion, their work is added to a searchable database. They are also entitled to use an exclusive Human Authored digital logo on their qualifying books, demonstrating that the text is their own intellectual creation, produced through human skill, labour and judgment.

You can find out more about the Human authored scheme by visiting humanauthored.co.uk.
