For teenager, Sophie Gracewell, things seem a little bleak. Her father is in prison, her mother is struggling to make ends meet and she has to work in the family business, a diner. Other than her best friend, Millie, there’s not a whole lot happening in the small Chicago suburb, where she lives. All that is about to change. The old abandoned house nearby has just been occupied for the first time in years. The new family has five brothers and seems like a dream come true for Sophie and Millie. When two of the brothers come into the diner, the girls strike up a friendship and, suddenly, the summer seems brighter. However, things are not as they seem. The handsome boys are part of a bigger problem. They are part of the Falcone Family, well known for their reputation, and it seems Sophie is not welcome in the Falcone house. She can’t understand why, and her fondness for the handsome Nic means she is not giving up without a fight. Blood will spill and hearts will be broken.

Catherine Doyle is a young writer and knows what the YA readers want. She has taken the classic tales of forbidden love and family feuds, re-worked from Romeo and Juliet to West Side Story and made it modern. There is drama, suspense, love, murder and violence. Add all these elements to a great collection of characters and you got yourself a fantastic YA book.

I rarely read this genre, as I have two teenager children who normally review them for me. In this case, the fact that the author was so young, and had secured a book deal from Chicken House, piqued my interest. That, and the fact that my kids are much slower at reviewing than I am 🙂

A great debut from a talented young woman. It seems Vendetta is the first book in a series and I am now curious to see where the author takes the reader next. Well done Catherine, and well done Chicken House, for spotting this talent!
