Buy the Book on How to Market Your Book
A great way to begin marketing your book is to let your friends, family, and wider network know about it in advance of publication. This first step can help generate early interest and drive initial sales.
Having a visible social media presence, a strong network, and an existing following can be a major advantage. It’s also useful to have an existing mailing list or Substack subscribers. If you have built a personal or professional network on social media, you can do very well with book sales.
Sharing posts during the different stages of writing, such as a picture of the front cover or the finished manuscript, is a great way to announce the upcoming release of your book and generate interest among your existing network.
Social media can be a powerful tool for marketing your book, especially when others share your posts. This can help your book reach thousands of people organically. Social media platforms tend to show posts to more users based on how many likes, comments, or shares they receive.
Letting your audience know about the release date, launch event, or pre-order availability is an important to help generate early sales. This is also a good time to share why you wrote the book, what readers can expect, and what they will gain from reading it.
How to Get Book Publicity

Writing a professional press release is the most important step in getting book publicity. A well-written press release is crucial to catching the attention of a journalist and getting them to feature your book.
The press release should include key information about your book release and be written in a style the journalist can easily re-use in print or online. In many cases, a great press release can be published almost word for word. Some journalists may even invite you for an interview based on it.
You can hire press agencies to help prepare a press release or use a template and add your own book details. Make sure your press release is properly formatted and edited, and in a format that journalists can work with.
Before contacting journalists for book publicity, make sure you have professional photographs ready to send along with your press release. Your author photo should be high resolution (typically 1MB or more) and in JPEG format.
If your book includes photographs, you could also include one or two samples. If you’re submitting photos from a book launch or event, provide 3–5 clear high resolution images.
How to Host a Book Launch
Plan Your Budget, Venue, and Guest List
Your budget and guest list will shape your venue options. Call around local venues to compare room hire costs and capacities. Some may offer the space for free if you or your guests will be purchasing drinks or food.
Visit the venue to make sure the space is right for you, and that it can comfortably accommodate the number of guests you are expecting.
Parking and accessibility are important considerations when deciding on a venue. Also, make sure you ask about their cancellation policy.
Invite a Co-Host or Guest Speaker
It’s helpful to have someone co-host or support you on the night. This could be a friend, a local personality, or a well-known journalist. They can introduce you and your book, run a Q&A, or interview you about the book. You can also do a short reading from the book or play a video.
This takes some pressure off you and can make the event more engaging. Another option is to have live music at the event if your budget allows.
Organise Book Deliveries and Promotional Materials
Ensure your books will be delivered at least 1–2 weeks before your launch. Delays can occur at the printers, or if you are ordering from overseas and dealing with customs.
Consider getting bookmarks printed. Bookmarks are a great way to share links of where to purchase additional copies, how to leave a review and where to connect with you on social media.
A pull-up banner containing the image of your front cover is another option to consider. It will work well for photos on the night and to share across social media and with local journalists.
Buy the Book on How to Get Book Reviews
Get Book Reviews in Advance of Publication
Getting reviews before your book’s official launch is an excellent way to receive early feedback and build momentum. If you have an existing mailing list, social media following, or Substack subscribers, consider putting out a request for early reviewers. There are also paid platforms like NetGalley that connect authors with readers who provide advance reviews for a fee.
It is also worth trying to get a book review from a high-profile influencer or author before your book is published. You can feature a quote from their review on your book’s cover or inside pages, helping to boost your book’s credibility.
When sharing digital copies of your book (e.g. eBook or PDF) for advance reviews, make sure it’s copyright-protected and that you trust who you’re sharing it with.
Get Reviews from Book Bloggers
There are many book bloggers and influencers on Instagram who read and review books. Collaborating with them can give you exposure to a wider reader audience.
Once you’ve identified a potential blogger, take time to research what genres they enjoy. Reach out with a personal message via social media or email and tell them why your book might be a good fit for their page.

If they take the time to review your book, make sure to follow-up with a thank you message. You can also send a small gift along with your book to show your appreciation.
