City of Silk by Glennis Virgo

An orphaned dressmaker, a ruthless merchant on the make, and a quest for justice in sixteenth century Bologna.

Elena Morandi’s chances of becoming a tailor seem slim, since survival in a city of silk, sewers and sleaze is not guaranteed and her virtue is at constant risk. No one escapes unscathed from the Baraccano Orphanage for Girls which, like most of the city, is subject to the lascivious patronage of Antonio della Fontana. But Elena is savvy and nourished by memories of life beyond the city walls. She is determined to avenge her dear friend Laura’s death, and working as a seamstress is her route to retribution. Along the way, she will navigate the dearth of opportunities afforded to women with charm and insistence, drawing into her orbit an ever-expanding group of friends and admirers of her work who will each have an important role to play in her plan for revenge.

Virgo’s research is meticulous but never overshadows the propulsive force of the story. Readers will find themselves rooting for Elena whose supreme talent and sharp wits will find a justice of sorts in the end.
