The Best Days of Our Lives

By Deirdre Lowney

For a young woman whose life ends much too soon, her influence ripples throughout her family and even beyond. Though we only see Leni for a short time in this book, there is no doubting how lost her family feel when she dies.

Alice at first seems to be the one most affected, embarking on what some people might call self-destructive behaviour. Her search to find answers about Leni’s last days seems to put her on collision course with everyone, including herself but I thought that this was realistic and I was pleased to see that no part was glossed over.

The way her mother Belinda, whose desperation not to let Leni go leads her to contact a clairvoyant, seemed realistic as I recall looking for signs (but not from a clairvoyant) when my father died in an accident. Going into her and Tony’s past was interesting and the story behind the story as it were turned out not to be story I expected it to be. The secrets that emerge turned out to be different to those I had expected to come out and I read the book eager and a little anxious as to who from Alice’s past was going to turn up again. Brother Will surprised me at how badly he took losing his sister – when I read of his life in the months following Leni’s death, I was fearful that he might not be the only member of his family to die before their time.

The Best Days of Our LivesIn all, I liked the main plot and the various sub-plots, all of which kept me guessing – and guessing wrong most of the time! The ending sounded bittersweet and believable. I’ll definitely read more of Lucy Diamond’s books.
