We Were Liars by E Lockhart

By Grace O’Reilly

I have recently finished reading We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.  It was the first read of the year for our Co-Operative Housing of Ireland’s Book Club, Page Turners.  It is a story written about the Sinclair family, and a secret, or is it?

Cadence, spends every summer on a private family island, with her family and her dear friends, Mirren, Johnny and Gait.  Only Gait and her share much more than just friendship.

Published in 2014, by Delacorte Press, this young adult, psychological suspense thriller, has been globally read and a finalist in some book awards, as well as winning Goodreads Choice Awards for Young Adult Fiction in 2014.  This best seller deals with love, loss, hurt, secrets and revelations, as well as other themes.

There are numerous cover designs.

The blurb at the back of the book reads:

“A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island. A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy. A group of four friends-the Liars-whose friendship turns destructive.”

Whilst I had the book out from my public library in Gorey, Co Wexford, I also listened to it on Borrow Box. and it was only my  second audio read since I was a child.  I have found a love of audio books, as I can listen to a book being read aloud to me, and multi-task at the same time, be that walking our Misty dog, cooking the dinner or cleaning the house.  Time is even more precious to me as I have a number of debilitating medical conditions, including Fibromyalgia, that sometimes has me so fatigued and pain ridden that even holding a book is too much, so listening to audio books are fantastic.  Why I waited so long, I will never know.  I am actually writing this book review from my bed.

We Were Liars by E LockhartThere are other books by E. Lockhart about the Sinclair family.  I am currently listening to the audio book on Borrow Box of Family of Liars!
